LearningStone.org - The UK's premier stone carving courses and facilities.

Course Overview 2013

Carving  stone in its place of origin with  PSQT is an  inspirational experience with each course following a complete process from the selection of stone, discovering form to finishing techniques. We teach letter-cutting, relief carving, masonry, architectural detail and 3D sculpture techniques. You can bring drawings, sketches, photographs and models, or develop ideas inspired from the shapes and forms found in the freshly quarried stone itself. Courses attract beginners and people from different backgrounds with many making return visits, including artists who want to develop new directions in their work. Our tuition creates an essential balance between learning skills and the development of ideas to provide a foundation of knowledge and good practice on which to build.

For many people the courses are life changing, bringing benefits to health, well being and even a change in career. The pure clean quality of air and high level of ozone coming in from the sea, predominantly from the South West, where there is no land between Portland and South America creates a clarity of light that helps to define the form as the sculpture emerges. A quality of light from the sea that Barbara Hepworth also found so inspiring in her garden and studio in St Ives.

Tutors are graduates from the  the Royal College of Art Sculpture School, Central School of Art & Design, Stone Conservation from the British Museum and Applied Architectural Carving and Stonework.  A PSQT  Record of Attainment can be provided at the end of the course for those who are training.
