Christina Chen

Artist Residency

Christina Chen (Taiwan) completed a 13 week artist residency with Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust based at the Drill Hall Gallery Research & Project Space.

The residency has enabled Christina to investigate the relationship between the process of carving stone as a means of three dimensional mark making using hand carving tools – and the action of making large scale drawings using charcoal, inks and paint.  The drawings have also taken on their own three dimensional form by being removed from the wall and then folded to form a new structure, transforming the drawn surface in a volume of marks.

The changing natural pools of light passing into the space have informed the drawn and carved surfaces – creating changing shadow and form throughout the day.
