Stone Carving & Sculpture Courses run from May to September each year in the Open Air Workshops of Tout Quarry, the first Sculpture Park in a quarry in the UK. Click here to download a booking form. The pure clean quality of air, with no land between Portland and Sounth America, and no pollution, creates a clarity of light that helps to define the form as the sculpture emerges.
|PSQT Stone Carving & Sculpture Courses are designed for beginners and all levels of skill. We teach letter-cutting, relief carving, masonry, architectural detail and 3D sculpture.People work with models, maquettes, drawings and sketches, or directly from shapes and forms found in the freshly quarried stone itself.
A PSQT Record Of Attainment (ROA) can be provided at the end of the course for those who are training.Click here to see the article by Clive Fewins in the Life section of the Sunday Telegraph in 2009. Contact us for further information.
The stone carving skills that we teach have been handed down through 12 generations on Portland and are uniquely combined with the tutor’s backgrounds in sculpture, architectural detail and direct carving.Tutors are qualified in sculpture from the Royal College of Art, Central School of Art & Design, Stone Conservation from the British Museum and applied architectural carving and stone work.
The course gives an inspirational experience of carving stone in its place of origin, a balance of elements, of sea, sky and stone. At the same time the quarry has 250 years of natural regeneration, a space to in which to reflect, where human time connects to the vastness of geological time.
