As part of Heritage Open Days in collaboration with the Portland Town Council,Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust is launching its ‘Living Land Archive’ at the Drill Hall and at the ‘Memory Stones’ — incorporating IT, immersive projections, artists’ collaborative projects and community presentations, showing how people can add to the Memory Stones over time.

Event Information
Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trusts Living Land Archive, animated through artists collaborative projects and community presentations, will bring the macro and micro detail of Portland’s unique landscape into focus; addressing issues of climate change within a new model for re-generation that shares knowledge and skills across disciplines. This forward-looking partnership both supports and creates new structures for the future sustainability of our landscape and environment, with presentations that relate to the interpretation and regeneration of 11 contrasting quarries within a half-mile radius of the Drill Hall. Presentations of all around sound and projections at the Drill Hall will highlight an immersive experience of the fossil record and climate change. At Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve there will be activities that connect with all ages, including stone carving workshops where you can carve your own sculpture and engage with artists on collaborative projects that regenerate our landscape and renew our connection with stone. Founded by firefighters, Frontline Coffee Roasters will provide refreshments with proceeds going to RNLI, NHS and emergency services.

Access
Parking is at Easton Lane below urban clearway. Bus stop is at Grove Corner on Easton Lane There is wheelchair ramped access to Drill Hall. There is a drop off point at the Drill Hall, The Drill Hall at 5,000 sq ft has disability toilets, refreshment area, is accessible to visually impaired and hearing impaired people through overhead PA sound system and large size all around sound and video projection.

The four day Voices to Stone event will include:
- Audio Visual Projectionsonto the Memory Stones from Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust’s ‘Living Land Archive’, showing how Portland stone was formed, the collective skills of the community who worked it by hand, its unique ecology and future regeneration through artists’ projects — engaging local schools with leading climate scientists research.
- Seven Projects that restore our environment will show how the stone unravels its histories and ecologies of past present and future through voices of climate scientists and specialists within the community working with the next generation of artists architects designers, the community, agencies and schools. All of the 7 projects address issues of climate change, biodiversity, ecosystems and renewal, with the Memory Stones becoming a curated space and site of reference. The 12 stones will transmit digital records of projects for everyone to access using mobile devices and printed materials.
- Stone Carving Workshops in the open air workshops of Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve, a 42 acre hand-worked environment with labyrinths and gullies saved from further mineral excavation by Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust in 1983 – pioneering a new model for regeneration of our environment and the wider Quarry Park. Stone Carving Workshops are for all ages where you can carve your own sculpture
- Interpretation Walks, will create a green corridor along a pathway of 150 metres, descending through 18 stages of the fossil record into the wider Portland Quarries Nature Park. Introductions by artists and ecologists on collaborative projects that regenerate our landscape.
- All Around Sound and Projections onto Portland’s fossil record with Living Land Archive recordings of the many people who have contributed their working histories and hand tools over the years.
- Illustrated Talks on the geology ecology and quarrying history linked to the regeneration projects for the ongoing development of the Living Land Archive interpreting 11 contrasting quarry environments that form the Quarry Park within a half-mile radius of the Drill Hall at its centre, made accessible via public footpaths.
- Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust – Living Land Archive, animated through artists collaborative projects and community presentations, will bring the macro and micro detail of Portland’s unique landscape into focus addressing issues of climate change within a new model for regeneration that is sharing skills and knowledge across disciplines.
- Drill Hall – Frontline Coffee Roasters will provide refreshments and cocktails as a fundraiser with proceeds going to RNLI, NHS and Emergency Services.
Voices to Stone – at the Memory Stones (a landmark sculptural gateway and platform for biodiversity — implemented after the COPP 21 UN Climate Change Conference and climate agreements made in 2015) is also in preparation to contribute to the forthcoming COPP 26 events.
